Illinois River Bluffs Coal Mining Heritage Circuit

Coal mining ruins above the Illinois River bluffs

Moderate

This technical loop system explores the forgotten coal mining infrastructure above the Illinois River between Ottawa and LaSalle, where shaft mines once fed the region’s industrial boom. The route follows old haul roads and equipment access tracks through dense timber and limestone bluffs, passing collapsed mine portals, rusted conveyor foundations, and flooded strip pits now turned wetlands. The challenging Cement City bypass requires careful navigation through loose shale and washouts near the old Portland cement quarries.

Moderate to difficult terrain demands high-clearance 4WD with skid plates – sharp limestone and hidden mine shafts make this no place for stock vehicles. Spring and fall offer the best conditions when summer vegetation doesn’t obscure hazards. No permits needed but watch for posted private mining claims. Camping available at nearby Starved Rock State Park. This is industrial archaeology at its grittiest, where Illinois coal built Chicago and left scars you can still trace by tire track.
