Old Dale Road

Historic mining supply route to the Colorado River

Moderate

Old Dale Road follows a century-old mining supply route from the edge of Joshua Tree National Park all the way to the Colorado River, passing through the abandoned townsite of Dale and remnants of the Virginia Dale Mine. This was once the main artery for hauling ore and supplies between the desert mining camps and the river ports, and you’ll still find concrete foundations, rusted machinery, and mine shafts scattered along the route. The road crosses several desert mountain ranges and vast playas where mirages dance on summer afternoons.

The full route is moderately difficult, requiring high-clearance 4WD for rocky sections and deep sand in the washes. Most of the road is well-maintained dirt suitable for stock vehicles with good ground clearance, but weather and washouts can change conditions quickly. Carry extra water, food, and fuel – services are nonexistent for the entire 50-mile stretch. Fall through spring is optimal, avoiding the brutal summer heat. Multiple dispersed camping opportunities exist throughout, making this an excellent multi-day exploration of California’s mining frontier heritage.
