Mississippi Palisades State Park River Ridge Technical Loop
Limestone bluffs meet Mississippi muscle.
The limestone cliffs above the Mississippi River at Palisades State Park hide a technical back-country loop that most visitors never see. This route follows old logging roads and maintenance tracks through oak-hickory forest, crossing several steep ravines including Devil’s Backbone Creek before emerging at Lookout Point’s commanding view of the river valley. The trail drops 400 feet from the bluff top to river level, with loose shale sections that’ll test traction control and careful throttle work.
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD for the creek crossings and rocky climb-outs. Spring and fall offer the best conditions when water levels are predictable and trails aren’t muddy from snowmelt. No permits needed for day use, but the park closes at sunset. Fuel up in Savanna before heading out. You’ll earn sweeping river views and solitude in one of Illinois’ most rugged landscapes, plus access to primitive camping areas most folks never find.
