Warren County Sugar Creek Bottoms Historic Mill Circuit
Peaceful bottomland cruise past three historic mill ruins
This gentle circuit follows old farm roads and timber access routes through the Sugar Creek bottoms west of Williamsport, connecting the ruins of three gristmills that powered Warren County’s grain trade in the 1800s. The route parallels Sugar Creek for most of its length, passing through stands of sycamore and cottonwood that flood annually, creating rich bottomland habitat that draws whitetail deer and wild turkey. Hollingsworth Mill ruins at mile 8 still show the stone foundation and millrace where farmers hauled grain by wagon from as far as Covington.
Any stock SUV with decent ground clearance can handle this route during dry conditions – it’s more about history and wildlife watching than technical driving. Spring floods make parts impassable from March through May, so plan for summer and fall visits when the gravel firms up. No permits needed and you can resupply in Williamsport, which sits right at the circuit’s midpoint. The payoff is peaceful creek-bottom cruising with plenty of spots to stretch your legs at the mill ruins and maybe catch sight of great blue herons working the shallows.
