Salamonie River Huntington County Sand Pit Heritage Circuit
Sand pit mining roads along the Salamonie River
This network of abandoned mining roads follows the Salamonie River through a landscape shaped by decades of sand and gravel extraction, now reverting to native bottomland forest. The route connects three former quarry sites, including the massive Roush Sand Pit where 40-foot bluffs reveal the geological story of ancient Lake Maumee. Deep sand sections test traction control while the old conveyor bridge foundations at mile 4.7 mark the halfway point. River access at each quarry site provides excellent fishing for smallmouth bass and northern pike.
Moderate to difficult depending on sand conditions – summer drought makes travel easier while spring moisture creates challenging traction scenarios. High-clearance 4WD essential, with sand recovery boards recommended for the deeper sections. Best tackled June through September when river levels are stable for wading access. No camping allowed but excellent day trip potential. This route tells the story of Indiana’s industrial heritage while providing genuine sand driving challenges rare in the Midwest.
