Prospector Creek Road — Faro to Anvil Range Summit

Above a ghost mine in the Anvil Range.

Moderate

Faro is the kind of town that reminds you how fast resource booms go cold. The Prospector Creek Road climbs out of this near-ghost community into the Anvil Range, tracing ground above the Cyprus Anvil Mine — once one of the largest open-pit lead-zinc operations in the world and shuttered for good in 1998. The road itself was built for mine operations and is wide enough for haul trucks, but decades of deferred maintenance have buckled sections and left drainage cuts that will high-centre a short-wheelbase rig. The real payoff is the summit ridge view: the open pit is staggering in scale, the Pelly Mountains stretch north without interruption, and on clear days you can trace the full length of the Campbell Highway corridor far below.

Easy to moderate for experienced drivers in a capable rig — the route is wide and mostly gravel, but the deteriorating sections and the altitude of the upper road require good clearance and confident driving. Faro has limited fuel and no services to speak of; carry extra. Best season is June through September, with the road typically clear of snow by late May at lower elevations. No permit required. Dispersed camping on the upper benches is outstanding — bring everything you need because there is nothing out here. Reclamation work is ongoing at the mine site, so observe posted closures around the pit rim.
