Freegold Mountain Mining Road — Mount Freegold Summit Approach via Stoddart Creek
Gold fever country — rugged, remote, unforgiving.
Freegold Mountain sits in the Dawson Range about 120 km southwest of Carmacks, and the road to its upper slopes is the kind of track that only exists because desperate men with bulldozers wanted gold bad enough to push steel through swamp and alpine tundra. The Stoddart Creek approach begins off the North Canol Road corridor and climbs steadily through dense boreal before the trees thin and the track turns into a rocky, rutted slog across open alpine. Several creek crossings on the lower section run thigh-deep during June snowmelt. Higher up, the road narrows to a single shelf cut into loose shale with drop-offs that demand your full attention. The Freegold Mountain gold camp operated sporadically from the 1930s through the 1990s, and remnant equipment, collapsed adits, and old camp debris litter the upper reaches.
This is an expert-level route. Lockers front and rear are strongly recommended; high-lift jack, full-size spare, and a recovery kit are non-negotiable. The track is completely unmaintained — downed trees, washed-out sections, and undefined trail edges are the norm, not the exception. No cell service anywhere on this road. No permit required for vehicle travel, though the active mineral tenures in the area mean checking current claim activity with Yukon Energy, Mines and Resources before you go is smart. Best season is July to early September. Carry three days of fuel and water. This one chews up rigs and rewards only those who came properly prepared.
