Kluane Icefield Discovery Road — Haines Junction to Donjek River Flats
Glacial outwash, braided fords, Saint Elias walls.
The Donjek River drains one of the largest non-polar icefield systems on the planet, and getting to its gravel-bar flats requires crossing the kind of terrain that reminds you just how young this landscape still is geologically. Launching from Haines Junction — the gateway to Kluane National Park — this route runs northwest along the park’s eastern boundary on rough gravel resource roads before dropping onto wide glacial outwash plains where the Donjek braids across hundreds of meters of active gravel bars. The Donjek River crossing itself is the make-or-break moment: a multi-channel, glacially turbid ford that fluctuates dramatically with temperature and rainfall. Cross only in the early morning when overnight cold has slowed glacial melt and dropped water levels.
Expert-level designation is earned by the Donjek ford alone — it has rolled rigs before. High-clearance 4WD with a snorkel and lockers is the minimum; a winch and a vehicle-mounted recovery board are not optional in this drainage. The Saint Elias backdrop is genuinely staggering — Kluane’s icefields dominate the western horizon the entire run. Fuel in Haines Junction and carry a serious reserve. Satellite communicator is non-negotiable this far from the Alaska Highway corridor. Best window is a narrow one: late June through early August before fall river rise.
