This 39-site campground sits on the shores of Kathleen Lake with the jagged peaks of the St. Elias Mountains reflecting in the water. Sites are well-spaced among spruce trees with fire rings and picnic tables. The lake offers decent lake trout fishing and is cold enough for a quick polar bear dip if you’re brave. Kitchen shelters provide wind protection during meal prep.
Access is via a 27-kilometer paved road off the Alaska Highway. Sites fill up during peak summer months, especially weekends. No reservations accepted – it’s first-come, first-served. The campground typically opens in mid-May and closes after Canadian Thanksgiving in October, weather dependent.
