Haines Road — Haines Junction to Dezadeash Lake
St. Elias giants, moose flats, and a WWII road.
The Haines Road — officially Yukon Highway 3 — is one of the great underrated drives in the territory. Built during World War II as a military supply route connecting Alaska and the Alaska Highway, the section from Haines Junction south along the Dezadeash River to Dezadeash Lake rolls through moose meadows, boreal flats, and open wetlands with the St. Elias Mountains stacking up to the west in a wall of ice and rock that never gets old. The lake itself sits at the edge of Kluane National Park and Reserve country and on calm mornings reflects the peaks in a way that’ll stop you cold. Watch for bears along the river corridor — this is some of the densest grizzly habitat in North America.
The road surface is well-maintained gravel and the route is accessible to most high-clearance vehicles including well-equipped 2WD rigs in dry conditions, though soft spots appear after heavy rain. Fuel in Haines Junction before heading out. Cell service is absent south of town. This is an ideal shoulder-season route — late May and September offer spectacular wildlife activity and far fewer recreational vehicles than peak summer. Dezadeash Lake Provincial Campground provides a formal overnight option, and the fishing for lake trout and pike is genuinely good. A shorter, achievable run that still delivers true Yukon wilderness.
