Reykjanes Peninsula Geothermal Circuit F427

Volcanic moonscape between tectonic plates

Moderate

The F427 cuts across Reykjanes Peninsula’s newest volcanic territory, threading between active geothermal fields where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge surfaces above sea level. This route passes the steaming Gunnuhver hot springs, crosses lunar-like lava fields formed in recent eruptions, and hits the dramatic Kleifarvatn crater lake where underground thermal activity has literally drained and refilled the water multiple times. The infamous Bridge Between Continents marks where you can walk between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.

Moderate difficulty with sharp volcanic rock sections and occasional soft ash patches that demand high clearance and careful tire placement. Stock 4WD handles most sections, but aggressive tread tires recommended for the newer lava fields. Best driven April through October when snow doesn’t obscure the route markers. No permits needed, but carry extra water since geothermal areas can dehydrate you fast. This is raw geology in motion — perfect for overlanders wanting to experience the planet’s creative violence firsthand.
