Westman Islands F261 Volcanic Access Route

F261 traces the emergency evacuation routes carved during the 1973 Eldfell eruption that nearly destroyed Heimaey town. This challenging track winds through fresh volcanic fields where houses still lie buried under hardened lava, and steam vents remind you the earth here is barely sleeping. The route connects the main harbor to the island’s remote eastern coast, passing the Eldheimar volcano museum and climbing through loose volcanic scree to reach observation points over the crater that changed this island forever.

Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD with good tires—volcanic rock shreds sidewalls without mercy. The 12-mile route can be completed year-round but weather exposure is intense during winter storms. Ferry passage from mainland adds complexity and cost, but no permits needed once you’re on island. Camping allowed at designated areas. This is living geology where you can touch rock that didn’t exist 50 years ago.
