Laugavegur F225 Volcanic Highland Route

Rhyolite peaks and glacial river crossings

Difficult

The F225 Laugavegur pushes 35 kilometers from the ring road through the Fjallabak Nature Reserve to Landmannalaugar’s otherworldly rhyolite peaks and geothermal hot springs. This technical route crosses the Eldgjá volcanic fissure and multiple unbridged rivers including the notorious Markarfljót crossing where flash floods can trap vehicles for days. The track passes through Frostastaðavatn lake’s stark lava fields where sulfur steam rises from the earth.

Difficult rating demands serious 4WD capability and river crossing skills. Summer-only access from late June to early September when snow clears. Essential gear includes recovery straps, emergency shelter, and extra fuel — no services exist for 100+ kilometers. Weather changes violently without warning. Those who push through earn access to Iceland’s most photographed geothermal wonderland and camping among rainbow-colored mountains that look like another planet.
