Fjallabak Nature Reserve Southern Route F208

Rainbow mountains and volcanic fissure traverse

Moderate

F208 traverses the southern Fjallabak Nature Reserve through a geological showcase of rhyolite mountains painted in impossible colors — orange, pink, green, and yellow volcanic formations that make this Iceland’s most photogenic highland drive. The 55-kilometer route connects Landmannalaugar to Eldgjá canyon, passing through the Frostastaðavatn lake district and alongside the massive Eldgjá volcanic fissure — the largest volcanic canyon in the world. Hot springs dot the landscape while obsidian fields glitter under highland light.

Moderate to difficult depending on conditions, requiring 4WD for river crossings and loose volcanic surfaces that can shift from solid ground to axle-deep ash without warning. Accessible June through September with best conditions in July-August when most rivers are fordable. The Landmannalaugar area offers limited facilities but no fuel — plan accordingly for the remote sections. This route delivers Iceland’s most diverse volcanic scenery in a single drive, from rainbow mountains to black sand deserts to steaming geothermal valleys.
