Básar — Útivist Goðaland Hut and Campsite Across the Krossá

Established Campground

Básar sits in Goðaland, on the Krossá’s far bank, tucked into birch scrub below the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull ice caps. Útivist, an Icelandic hiking club, runs it. There’s a tent area, a bunkhouse, and a service building with toilets and washing facilities. It’s a trailhead camp first. The Fimmvörðuháls route to Skógar starts right here, and the Laugavegur trek ends here. Expect hikers, group tours, and a lot of boots drying on railings in July and August.

You have to ford the Krossá on F249, and it’s a real river: glacial melt, shifting channels, and levels that rise through the afternoon and after rain. Walk it, watch the bus tracks, and check road.is and safetravel.is the same morning. Season is roughly late June through early September, depending on road opening. Rules are strict here, including staying on marked ground and no open fires. Booking, rates, and opening dates change yearly, so verify with Útivist before you commit your rig to the river.

Have a dirty day.
