Þórsmörk — Langidalur Campground
Langidalur sits at the heart of Þórsmörk Nature Reserve, one of Iceland’s most dramatic glacial valley systems. Run by Ferðafélag Íslands (FÍ), it’s the definitive end-point camp for hikers and overlanders finishing the Laugavegur traverse. Expect a proper hut, tent platforms, toilets, hot showers, and a cooking area — by Icelandic Highland standards, this is well-equipped. It gets busy mid-July through August; book hut space well in advance but tent pitches are generally available if you show up. Fire restrictions are total — open fires prohibited anywhere in Þórsmörk.
Access requires crossing multiple glacial rivers — the Þórsmörk approach road is strictly for modified high-clearance 4WD with snorkel or very capable suspension. River levels fluctuate daily with meltwater. Purpose-built highland buses (Rift Valley bus service) also serve the camp. Best season is late June to mid-September. Snow can linger into July on surrounding ridges.
