Skógafoss Base Trail Access
This trailhead sits directly behind the thundering 60-meter Skógafoss waterfall, marking the start of the famous Fimmvörðuháls hiking route to Þórsmörk valley. The trail climbs steeply through 25 waterfalls before crossing between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. Well-marked path with emergency huts, but requires proper gear and weather awareness – conditions change rapidly at elevation.
Accessed via paved Route 1 with large parking area that fills quickly in summer. The waterfall viewing platform gets soaked from spray, and the trail can be muddy and steep in the first kilometer. Popular day-hike destination even for those not attempting the full crossing. GPS coordinates mark the actual trail start, not the tourist viewing area.
