Seljalandsfoss — 60-Metre Waterfall at the Gateway to Þórsmörk Road
Seljalandsfoss drops about 60 metres off the old sea cliffs of the south Iceland lowlands, and the path loops right behind the curtain of water. It’s the last real landmark before the Þórsmörk road peels off Route 1, so most rigs heading for the Krossá stop here to top off, eat, and air down their heads. Expect tour buses and a crowded car park in summer. Go early or late for sun and fewer people. The parking lot is paid and there are toilets on site. Verify current fees, since they’ve changed over the years.
The walkway behind the falls gets wet, slick, and icy in shoulder season, so wear boots. A short walk north brings you to Gljúfrabúi, a waterfall hidden inside a cleft in the rock. You get in by wading the creek, so waterproof footwear helps. From here the road to Þórsmörk is a short drive east. Check road.is and safetravel.is for Krossá conditions before you commit to the crossing. Water levels swing hard with the weather and glacial melt.
Have a dirty day.
