Parque Nacional Huerquehue Araucaria Circuit
Ancient forests, volcanic climbs, alpine solitude.
The Araucaria Circuit cuts through Chile’s most pristine monkey puzzle forests, where 2,000-year-old trees tower over volcanic scree and alpine lakes. This remote backcountry route starts near Pucón and climbs through dense lenga forests before breaking into the ancient Araucaria araucana groves that survived the last ice age. The track gets technical after Laguna Toro, with loose volcanic rock and creek crossings that test clearance and traction.
Moderate to difficult depending on conditions — wet weather makes the volcanic soil treacherous. High-clearance 4WD essential, low-range gearing recommended for the steeper sections. Best tackled April through November when snow clears but before summer crowds arrive. No permits required but park entry fees apply. Limited dispersed camping available near Laguna Verde. You’ll earn solitude among trees older than Christ and alpine vistas that stretch to the Pacific.
