Tatchun Creek Road — Carmacks to Tatchun Lake
Quiet lake country west of the Klondike Hwy.
Tatchun Creek Road peels west off the Klondike Highway roughly 20 kilometres north of Carmacks and immediately feels like the pavement never existed. The route follows the creek valley through a landscape of open spruce and trembling aspen, crossing a handful of culvert-bridged drainages before opening onto Tatchun Lake — a quiet, fish-rich lake with a territorial campground that sees a fraction of the traffic it deserves. The road is generally passable for most of its length in a capable high-clearance vehicle, but the final few kilometres tighten up and develop soft shoulders after heavy rain that will swallow a tire if you’re not paying attention.
Rated Moderate overall, this one is accessible to confident high-clearance 2WD rigs in dry conditions but warrants 4WD after rain or in spring. It’s one of the more beginner-friendly backcountry runs in the central Yukon, making it a solid shakedown route before heading deeper into the territory. The Tatchun Lake Territorial Campground at the end provides maintained outhouse facilities and fire rings. Best window is June through September. Fuel in Carmacks before you go. Cell service drops within 5 kilometres of the highway junction and stays gone.
