Dawson Range Backcountry — Carmacks to Mount Nansen Gold Camp

Lode-gold history deep in the Dawson Range.

Moderate

Mount Nansen sits in the Dawson Range roughly 80 kilometres northwest of Carmacks, and the road to reach it is a legitimate piece of Yukon mining history. Lode gold was discovered here in 1898, and the district saw renewed activity as recently as the 1990s. The track leaves the main highway corridor and climbs steadily through boreal forest before breaking into the open benchlands of the Dawson Range — wide, wind-exposed country with long views across the Yukon plateau. The old mill site and headframe remnants near the summit are the main historical anchor, but the drive itself through the surrounding range is the real draw.

The road is rough two-track on the upper sections with soft shoulders and significant rutting from heavy equipment that worked the area in past decades. A high-clearance truck or SUV handles most of it, but the steeper sections benefit from 4WD low and a decent set of all-terrains. Carmacks is your fuel and supply point — fill up there. Best season is June through September; the road can be impassable in wet shoulder seasons. No formal permits required. Cell service drops out fast once you leave the highway corridor. This is a solid day run or overnight camp from Carmacks.
