Big Bend Ranch State Park Lajitas to Presidio Backcountry Road

This backcountry route cuts through the heart of Big Bend Ranch State Park, following old ranch roads and military patrol routes between Lajitas and Presidio. The 45-mile track threads through volcanic badlands, past abandoned mercury mines, and along the international border where Comanche and Apache once raided. Key waypoints include the historic Sauceda Ranger Station ruins, Fresno Creek crossing, and the challenging Ojito Adentro arroyo system that can trap unwary drivers in loose sand and exposed bedrock.

This is a difficult route requiring high-clearance 4WD, recovery gear, and desert experience. Sharp volcanic rock destroys tires regularly, and the remote location means self-rescue capability is essential. Best tackled October through March when temperatures drop below triple digits. Carry two days of water, extra fuel, and a satellite communicator. The payoff is genuine solitude in some of Texas’s most unforgiving and spectacular desert, where you’ll see more javelinas than people.
