Whiteface River Off-Highway Vehicle Trail
Minnesota's most remote wilderness corridor
The Whiteface River OHV Trail carves 27 miles through some of Minnesota’s most pristine boreal forest, following old logging roads and newly cut single track between Finland and the Caribou Trail. You’ll ford the Whiteface River multiple times, navigate through ankle-deep mud holes that’ll test your approach angles, and climb rocky ridges where ancient white pines tower overhead. The trail’s highlight is the remote backcountry camping area at Whiteface Reservoir, accessible only by this route or long portage.
This is challenging terrain demanding experienced driving skills and proper recovery gear. Stock 4WD won’t cut it—you need solid skid plates, mud tires, and a winch for the boggy sections between miles 8-12. Spring runoff makes the river crossings treacherous until late June. The reward is solitude in Minnesota’s last frontier, with world-class trout fishing and camping under old-growth forest canopy. Load up on fuel and supplies in Finland because there’s nothing out there but wilderness.
