Finland State Forest Technical Loop

Lost logging roads through true wilderness

Difficult

Hidden in the Finland State Forest north of Silver Bay, this technical loop system follows decades-old logging roads that were abandoned when the timber played out in the 1970s. The main challenge is navigating the maze of unmarked two-tracks that wind through dense spruce and fir forest, with several creek crossings that can become serious obstacles during spring runoff or after heavy rains. The route connects through the Ghost Lake area and includes a gnarly climb up to an old fire tower site with panoramic views toward the Boundary Waters Cannonball Wilderness Area.

This is expert-level navigation requiring GPS, paper maps, and recovery gear – these roads aren’t maintained and deadfalls are common. High-clearance 4WD is mandatory, with skid plates recommended for the rocky creek beds. Best tackled in late summer when water levels are down and the ground is firm. No permits required but notify someone of your plans – cell service is nonexistent and you’re truly in the middle of nowhere. Dispersed camping is allowed throughout the forest. This loop rewards serious overlanders with genuine wilderness solitude just hours from Duluth.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler handle the Finland State Forest Technical Loop?

No, this trail requires a modified 4WD with skid plates minimum. Stock vehicles will get damaged on the sharp rocks and deep ruts left by logging operations.

Is the Finland State Forest loop accessible in spring or fall?

Best season is July-September only. Spring brings impassable mud from snowmelt, and fall conditions can be unpredictable with early snow blocking higher sections.

Do I need permits to run the Finland State Forest Technical Loop?

No permits required - it's managed by Minnesota DNR as public forest land. Dispersed camping is allowed but follow Leave No Trace principles.

What's the hardest obstacle on this 34-mile loop?

The water crossings can be the biggest challenge, especially after rain when creek levels rise. Some sections also have loose rock gardens that'll test your line choice and momentum.

Should I plan on camping since there's no cell service?

Yes, this is designed as a 1-2 day adventure with zero cell coverage throughout. Bring extra food, water, and recovery gear since you're truly on your own in the wilderness.
