Art Loeb Trail Shining Rock Wilderness Access Road
Gateway to North Carolina's granite wilderness
The dirt road to the Art Loeb trailhead cuts through some of the most pristine wilderness in the Blue Ridge, winding past the ghostly white quartz outcrops that give Shining Rock its name. Forest Service Road 816 climbs relentlessly from the Davidson River valley, threading between towering rhododendron thickets and crossing Cold Mountain Creek twice before reaching the wilderness boundary at 5,200 feet. The final push to the parking area requires navigating loose rock sections and washouts that’ll test your line choice and momentum control.
This is moderate territory demanding high clearance and decent approach angles, though a well-driven pickup can make it with care. Spring brings muddy conditions from snowmelt, while summer offers the clearest passage but heavy foot traffic. No permits required, but dispersed camping is limited by wilderness regulations. The reward is direct access to some of North Carolina’s most dramatic high-country hiking, with views stretching across the Pisgah National Forest to the Great Smokies.
