Warrior Creek Road to Dark Ridge
Technical creek crossings and ridge camping
Warrior Creek Road splits off from Forest Service Road 229 near the Davidson River and immediately drops into a boulder-strewn creek crossing that sorts capable rigs from mall crawlers. This 18-mile loop winds through dense hardwood forests of Pisgah National Forest, climbing from 2,400 feet to Dark Ridge at 4,200 feet via a series of switchbacks that test approach angles and tire placement. The route connects to several primitive camping spots along Cathey’s Creek and passes the ruins of an old logging camp at mile 8.
Moderate to difficult depending on conditions, requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates for the creek crossings and rocky sections. Spring runoff makes water crossings challenging through May, while late summer offers the most reliable passage. No permits required, but dispersed camping follows Leave No Trace principles. Fuel up in Brevard – there’s nothing out here but mountain views and the kind of solitude that reminds you why you bought that truck in the first place.
