Sumter National Forest Horsepasture River Gorge Access

Granite gorge descent to Rainbow Falls

Difficult

The Horsepasture River Gorge Access drops you into one of South Carolina’s most dramatic river canyons, where granite bedrock creates a series of thundering waterfalls including the 200-foot Rainbow Falls. Forest Service Road 4130 starts innocuous but turns technical fast as it switchbacks down the gorge wall, with loose granite sections and exposure that’ll test your nerve. The route dead-ends at a primitive camping area where you can hear Turtleback Falls pounding upstream.

This is difficult technical 4×4 territory — steep, loose, and unforgiving with no room for error on the narrow shelf sections. Stock vehicles need not apply; you want low-range, lockers, and solid armor. Spring and fall offer the best combination of moderate water levels and cooler temps for the hiking portion. No permits required but respect the wilderness boundary markers. The payoff is legitimate backcountry access to some of the Southeast’s most spectacular waterfalls, plus camping that feels genuinely remote despite being relatively close to civilization.
