Squaw Flat to Confluence Overlook — Needles District Canyon Country Bench Road
Slickrock and sand to where two rivers collide.
Most people drive the paved spur into the Needles District of Canyonlands, snap a photo at the trailhead, and leave. The ones who air down and head toward Confluence Overlook on the unpaved bench road see a completely different park. From Squaw Flat Campground the route pushes southwest across exposed Wingate sandstone fins, through loose sand pockets between the redrock towers, and past a pair of creek crossings at Horse Canyon wash that can run muddy after rain. The last mile to the Confluence Overlook rim delivers a gut-punch view straight down to where the Green River hits the Colorado — two different colors of water meeting 1,000 feet below you, in a canyon no road reaches from below.
High clearance 4WD is mandatory; two-wheel drive vehicles will not make it past the first wash. Lockers are strongly recommended for the slickrock approach sections where angle and traction combine badly. Permits are required for overnight use in the backcountry — get them through Recreation.gov well in advance, especially spring and fall. Best season is March through May and September through November; summer temps exceed 105°F regularly. Bring every drop of water you need — none available beyond the campground. Cell service is nonexistent. The solitude out here, especially midweek, is the whole point.
