Caesars Head State Park Raven Cliff Falls 4×4 Access
Granite gauntlet to 420-foot falls
This gnarly 8-mile descent drops 1,400 feet from Caesars Head’s rim down to Raven Cliff Falls, the state’s tallest waterfall at 420 feet. The route follows an old CCC road built in the 1930s, now degraded to a boulder-strewn technical challenge requiring constant momentum and precise wheel placement. Matthews Creek crossing at mile 4.2 becomes treacherous during spring runoff, while the final approach to the falls base navigates house-sized granite boulders that claimed more than a few oil pans.
Expert-level difficulty demands rock sliders, skid plates, and aggressive tread with low-range gearing essential. Spring offers the most dramatic waterfall but also the most dangerous creek crossings – summer and fall provide safer passage. No camping permitted, but the payoff is standing at the base of one of the Southeast’s most spectacular waterfalls with crowds nowhere in sight. Bring recovery gear and expect body damage on the granite gauntlet.
