Kearny County Sand Hills Loop

Kansas sand that'll swallow trucks whole

Expert

The Kearny County Sand Hills Loop cuts through some of the most unforgiving terrain Kansas has to offer — active sand dunes that shift with every wind and swallow two-tracks whole. This 18-mile circuit starts near Lakin and winds through the Bear Creek Dunes, where 19th-century cattle drivers lost entire herds to the shifting sands. You’ll cross Bear Creek twice, navigate between towering grass-stabilized dunes, and follow old ranch roads that disappear into blowouts deeper than your truck is tall.

This is expert-level sand driving that’ll humble cocky drivers fast. You need serious sand tires, recovery gear, and the skills to use both — cell service is nonexistent and the nearest help is 30 miles away. Summer heat makes this a spring and fall run only. But if you can handle the challenge, you’ll experience Kansas like almost no one else has — endless rolling dunes under big sky, with not another soul for miles. Pure prairie solitude at its most raw.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler make it through the sand hills?

Not recommended without sand tires and significant deflation to 12-15 PSI. Stock all-terrains will dig you straight to the frame rails.

Is this trail accessible in winter?

Best avoided December through March due to unpredictable weather and wet sand conditions that create impassable mud. April-May and September-November offer the most stable sand.

Do I need permits to run this loop since it crosses private ranch roads?

Yes, you must obtain permission from local ranchers as portions cross private property. Contact the Kearny County extension office for current access information.

What's the gnarliest section I should prepare for?

The north bowl section has 30+ foot dunes with loose sugar sand that can swallow a full-size truck. Multiple vehicles and winch points are essential here.

How much fuel should I carry for the 18-mile loop?

Bring extra fuel as sand driving burns 2-3x normal consumption, and Lakin is your only fuel stop within 50 miles. A full tank plus 5-10 gallons is smart insurance.
