Sandsage Bison Range Backcountry Circuit

Where bison still rule the prairie

Easy

The Sandsage Bison Range protects 2,500 acres of virgin mixed-grass prairie where a herd of 80 American bison roam freely across the landscape their ancestors knew for millennia. This 12-mile circuit follows old ranch roads and wildlife management tracks through sandsage prairie and draws, offering close encounters with bison, elk, and white-tailed deer. The route passes through the historic Finney County buffalo wallow complex, natural depressions where bison have wallowed for centuries.

Easy difficulty on well-maintained dirt roads suitable for any vehicle with moderate ground clearance. The main challenge is wildlife — bison have right of way and can be unpredictable during rutting season (July-August). Best visited April through June and September through November when temperatures are moderate and animals are more active. Requires advance reservation and guided entry through Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks. No camping allowed on the range, but nearby Finney County State Lake offers developed camping. A rare chance to see Kansas as it existed before settlement.

Frequently asked questions

Can my stock Subaru Outback handle this trail?

Yes, any stock vehicle with decent ground clearance can manage these prairie two-tracks. The dirt surface is generally smooth with minimal ruts or obstacles.

Is the trail open during winter months?

The range is open year-round, but winter access can be sketchy due to snow closure of rural roads leading to the trailhead. Best season is April-June and September-November for reliable access and comfortable weather.

Do I need a permit to drive the backcountry circuit?

Yes, you need a Kansas State Park vehicle permit. Purchase online at the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks website or at the entrance station if staffed.

What's the most challenging part of this easy-rated trail?

Navigation through unmarked prairie two-tracks can be tricky - GPS is essential since the routes aren't always obvious. The actual driving is straightforward with minimal elevation change.

Will I actually see bison on the drive?

Very likely - the 7,500-acre range supports around 200 bison that roam freely. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best viewing opportunities, though sightings aren't guaranteed.
