Superior National Forest Temperance River Gorge Dispersed Sites
Half a dozen primitive sites tucked in the birch and aspen forest above the Temperance River gorge, reached by a rough logging spur off the Sawbill Trail. Each site accommodates one rig with space for a tent, most with makeshift fire rings and glimpses of Lake Superior through the trees. The real draw is hiking down to the gorge itself — a slot canyon carved through volcanic rock that most tourists never see.
The final mile requires high clearance due to washouts and embedded rocks. Sites can be buggy in June and July, but September brings brilliant colors and cool nights. No facilities, no cell service, and you’ll need to haul water from the Tofte ranger station.
