Telegraph Pass to Gila Bend
Historic stagecoach route through the Gila Mountains
The old Telegraph Pass route cuts through the Gila Mountains on a rugged track that once carried stagecoaches between California and Phoenix. You’ll grind through rocky washes and climb over Telegraph Pass itself at 1,860 feet, where scattered telegraph pole remnants still mark the historic communication line. The route drops into the Mohawk Valley through technical rocky sections that’ll test your line choice and clearance around Mile 18.
This is moderate-to-difficult terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and good tires. Summer is brutal — run this October through March. No permits needed but carry extra water and fuel; it’s 47 miles of genuine desert isolation with zero services. You’ll earn spectacular views of the Mohawk Dunes and a real taste of Arizona’s transportation history on one of the state’s lesser-known historic routes.
