Carretera Antigua Guadalajara to Real de Asientos Silver Mine Circuit
Colonial silver route through forgotten mining country
This forgotten colonial road was the main artery between Guadalajara and the silver mines of Real de Asientos back when Spain was bleeding Mexico dry. Today it’s a mix of crumbling cobblestone and washboard dirt that passes through some of the most desolate country in Aguascalientes. The route threads between ancient mine shafts and collapsed smelters, with the ghost town of Asientos marking the halfway point where you can still see the church tower rising from the desert scrub.
Moderate difficulty but don’t let that fool you — it’s the distance and remoteness that’ll get you. Stock high-clearance is fine, but bring extra water, fuel, and food for at least two days. The road gets washed out during summer rains, so stick to October through May. Some of the mine sites are on private property, so respect the fencing. What you get is a genuine piece of Mexican history without the tour buses, plus camping under stars that seem close enough to touch.
