Sierra de Manantlán Biosphere Circuit

Cloud forest traverse through volcanic wilderness

Expert

The Sierra de Manantlán Biosphere Reserve harbors some of Mexico’s last intact cloud forests, accessible only via a network of abandoned logging roads that switchback up volcanic ridges between 5,000 and 8,000 feet. This remote circuit connects the Colima border near Comala with the Jalisco highlands around Autlán de Navarro, passing through the original wild teosinte habitat—the ancestor of modern corn. Key challenges include the technical descent into Barranca de Manantlán and multiple stream crossings during the transition between pine-oak and tropical dry forests.

This is expert-level territory requiring serious 4WD capability, winch, and navigation skills as GPS often fails in the dense canopy. Roads can be impassable during rainy season (June-October). Best attempted in dry season with multiple vehicles and camping gear for 3-4 days. No services exist within the reserve—carry extra fuel, water, and emergency supplies. The reward is accessing one of Mexico’s most biodiverse and least-visited wilderness areas.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle this trail, or do I actually need a winch?

A stock rig will not cut it here. The trail spec says modified 4WD with winch as the minimum — that means lifted, skid plates, and a working winch. The abandoned logging roads deteriorate badly in sections and the cloud forest mud is no joke. Come under-built and you're a recovery waiting to happen with nobody nearby to help.

Is the trail passable in summer, or is there a hard reason the best season is November through April?

Summer is the rainy season in Jalisco and the water crossings go from passable to genuinely dangerous fast. The dirt surface turns to deep mud throughout, and landslides on old logging cuts are a real risk. November through April is dry season — that's when you go.

Do I need a permit to run this trail and who issues it?

Yes, a permit is required. CONANP manages the Sierra de Manantlán Biosphere Reserve and you'll need to contact them directly before your trip. Coordinate in advance — enforcement does occur inside the reserve and showing up without paperwork can end your trip at the gate.

What's the hardest section of the circuit and what should I actually expect there?

The ridge sections connecting the volcanic high points push to 8,200 ft and combine loose volcanic rock, off-camber shelf road, and no bailout options for long stretches. Add cloud forest moisture and those surfaces get slick fast even in dry season. Recovery anchors are scarce, so if you tip or get stuck on the ridge, you're doing a long winch or a long wait.

How far is the nearest gas from the trailhead and is 68 miles enough to drain a standard tank?

Autlán de Navarro is your last confirmed fuel stop before the circuit — fill completely there. At expert-level crawling pace over 68 miles with the elevation change and terrain, fuel burn is significantly higher than highway driving. Run with a full tank plus a jerry can minimum; there is no resupply on the route.
