Established Campground

Rustic camping area at the base of Pico de Tancítaro, Mexico’s highest peak at 12,664 feet. Basic facilities with pit toilets and fire rings scattered among pine forest at 9,200 feet elevation. Views across the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt on clear mornings are spectacular. Gets cold at night even in summer — pack warm gear.

Access via rough dirt road from Tancítaro town, high-clearance recommended for the final 8 miles. Park rangers collect modest fees during peak season (November-April). Can fill up during Christmas and Easter weeks with Mexican climbers.
