Volcan de Paricutin Trailhead
The dirt parking area sits at the edge of Angahuan village, where horses and guides wait to take visitors across the lava fields to Paricutin volcano. The world’s youngest volcano erupted from farmer Dionisio Pulido’s cornfield in 1943, burying two villages before going dormant in 1952. The buried church of San Juan Parangaricutiro still pokes through the black volcanic rock, creating one of Mexico’s most surreal landscapes.
Access is via a rough dirt road from Angahuan that requires high-clearance. The 8-kilometer hike to the crater rim takes most overlanders 3-4 hours each way across loose volcanic scree. Local guides are recommended for navigation and cultural context. The area gets busy on weekends with Mexican families, but weekdays are quiet.
