Cascada de Tzaráracua Trailhead
The crown jewel of the Río Cupatitzio watershed, where spring-fed water plunges over black volcanic rock into a emerald pool surrounded by cloud forest. The 2-mile trail drops 800 feet through dense vegetation — massive tree ferns, bromeliads, and Michoacán pines creating a tropical montane ecosystem rare in Mexico. Swimming possible in the lower pools, though the water stays cold year-round.
Parking area accommodates maybe 15 vehicles on a dirt lot. Trail can be slippery during rainy season (June-September). Local vendors at the trailhead sell fresh avocados and Uruapan’s famous artisanal ice cream. Entry fee collected at a small booth — bring cash pesos.
