Sewell Lake Road — Russell to Sewell Lake via Assiniboine River Uplands

Where prairie ends and the bush fights back.

Moderate

West-central Manitoba doesn’t get the overlanding love it deserves. The Sewell Lake Road, branching off Provincial Road 482 northwest of Russell toward Sewell Lake Provincial Park, cuts through a transitional landscape where prairie agriculture gives way abruptly to boreal parkland — poplar bluffs, muskeg seams, and glacially-deposited boulder fields that will test your line-picking skills. The road itself is a mix of maintained gravel and unimproved two-track, with a notorious low section near the Assiniboine River upland drainage that collects standing water long after rain events. Locals know this stretch as the section that swallows trucks whose drivers assume the puddle is shallow. It usually isn’t.

This is a manageable run for a capable high-clearance 4×4 with a locker, though in dry July or August conditions a aggressive stock truck can navigate it carefully. Spring is a firm no — the clay-heavy soil becomes near-impassable. The route ends at Sewell Lake, a quiet provincial park with basic camping, good walleye fishing, and zero crowds. Russell has fuel, food, and cell service before you head out; once you’re on the two-track spurs, you’re on your own. No permit required. Best run July through early October.
