Ottertail County Lakes Loop Trail
Prairie pothole sand track adventure
This 45-mile loop starts near Fergus Falls and winds through sandy county roads and forest service tracks that connect dozens of glacial lakes scattered across the prairie pothole region. The route crosses into North Dakota near Wahpeton, following old section roads that were originally laid out for homesteaders accessing remote quarter-sections. Key waypoints include the crossing at Buffalo River State Park and the technical sand climbs near Tintah Lake where loose glacial till can bog down underpowered rigs.
Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance and 4WD for the deeper sand sections, especially after rain when clay underlayers turn greasy. Best run May through October when county roads aren’t gated for spring thaw protection. No permits needed but respect private land boundaries – many roads cross working farms. The payoff is genuine solitude among some of the continent’s richest waterfowl habitat, with excellent dispersed camping near public water access points.
