Big Stone Lake State Park
Big Stone Lake stretches 26 miles along the Minnesota-South Dakota border, making it the state’s largest lake. The park sits on the eastern shore with 37 campsites scattered between prairie grassland and granite outcrops. Most sites can handle larger rigs, though a few walk-in spots are tucked into the trees. The lake offers decent fishing for walleye and northern pike, and the swimming beach gets busy on summer weekends.
The park sits right off Highway 7, making it an easy stop for overlanders heading to or from the western trail systems. Spring and fall offer the best camping with fewer crowds and cooler temps. Winter access is limited but the park stays open for ice fishing and cross-country skiing.
