Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge Border Road
Premier prairie wetlands wildlife drive
This 18-mile loop cuts through some of South Dakota’s finest waterfowl country, where 100,000 mallards and pintails stage during fall migration. The two-track winds between glacial potholes and native grassland, crossing four low-water bridges that flood out during spring runoff. Mile marker 8 hits the observation blind overlooking Sand Lake proper—bring binoculars and expect to see everything from trumpeter swans to yellow-headed blackbirds depending on season.
Easy to moderate difficulty with standard clearance sufficient in dry conditions, but spring mud can bog anything without 4WD. Roads close March through July for nesting season, so plan for late summer through fall. No permits required beyond the refuge entrance fee. Stock up on fuel and supplies in Columbia—services are thin out here. You’ll earn some of the best prairie bird photography opportunities in the northern plains and a genuine taste of what this landscape looked like before the plow.
