Duck Mountain Provincial Park — Roaring River Fire Road to Baldy Mountain Summit Access

Manitoba's highest point on clay and grit.

Moderate

Baldy Mountain tops out at 831 metres, making it the highest point in Manitoba, and the fire road approach through Duck Mountain Provincial Park earns it every bit of that modest elevation. The route leaves Provincial Road 366 near the Wellman Lake campground and follows Roaring River drainage north before cutting west on a forestry track toward the summit access area. The road surface is Manitoba clay — pure bentonite hell when wet, washboard concrete when dry — with a few deep-rutted sections through spruce lowlands where water pools mid-track. This isn’t a technical rock-crawling challenge; it’s a mud management exercise and a navigation problem, since signage is sparse and the old cutblocks blur the correct line.

Moderate difficulty in summer dry conditions, but it flips to difficult after any serious rain. A high-clearance 4WD with good all-terrain tires handles it, but a locker on the rear axle is insurance you’ll appreciate in the wet clay sections. Manitoba Parks manages the area — no backcountry permit required for day travel, but registered camping is available at Wellman Lake. Cell service is nonexistent on the summit road. Best season is July through early October. Dauphin is your fuel and supply town — 60 kilometres south on Highway 10 — don’t skip it.
