Porcupine Hills Provincial Forest — Thunder Mountain Road to Cowan River Flats

Manitoba's forgotten highlands above the prairie.

Moderate

The Porcupine Hills are one of Manitoba’s forgotten highlands — a forested plateau that breaks the flat prairie monotony hard and fast north of Swan River. The Thunder Mountain Road picks up off Highway 83 near Cowan and climbs through mixed aspen and white spruce into the core of the Porcupine Hills Provincial Forest. The track crosses several unnamed creek drainages before reaching the open ridgeline south of Thunder Mountain, where on a clear day you can see the Duck Mountains to the east and the Saskatchewan border country to the west. The descent to the Cowan River flats passes old selective-cut blocks now thick with regenerating birch.

The road is a decommissioned resource access route — maintenanced sporadically, not regularly graded. High clearance is mandatory; 4WD is strongly recommended in spring or after prolonged rain when the clay-heavy soil near the river flats turns greasy and unforgiving. No permit required. The nearest fuel and services are in Swan River, about 40 kilometres south. This is black bear country — keep a clean camp. Best season is July through October before freeze-up. Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the provincial forest.
