Peace River Canyon Historical Mining Circuit

Coal camps and dinosaur bones in prairie country

Easy

The Peace River Canyon circuit follows 45 kilometers of well-maintained gravel roads through the rolling prairie country where BC meets Alberta, connecting a dozen abandoned coal mining operations from the early 1900s. The highlight is the Dinosaur Lake fossil beds at kilometer 23, where you can still find 70-million-year-old marine fossils in the roadside shale — this whole region was underwater when T. Rex ruled the continent. The route passes through Hudson’s Hope, where the massive WAC Bennett Dam holds back Williston Lake, creating one of the largest man-made reservoirs on Earth.

Easy running suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, making it perfect for overlanders with trailers or families wanting a taste of backcountry without the technical drama. Spring through fall are ideal; winter brings serious cold and occasional road closures. The Peace River Regional District maintains most roads, so they stay passable even after rain. Camping at Dinosaur Lake Provincial Park or dozens of random pullouts with million-dollar views across the Peace River valley. It’s not extreme adventure, but sometimes you need a trail that delivers scenery without beating the hell out of your rig.
