Monkman Provincial Park Coal Branch Road

Coal railway grade to Kinuseo Falls wilderness

Difficult

The Coal Branch Road follows the original railway grade that once hauled coal from the remote Quintette Mine through Monkman Provincial Park’s rugged interior. Starting from Hudson’s Hope, this 85-kilometer route climbs steadily through mixed boreal forest before emerging onto alpine benchland dotted with pristine lakes. The real challenge comes after kilometer 60 where washouts and rocky creek crossings demand careful navigation, especially around the approach to Kinuseo Falls—a 60-meter plunge that rivals anything in the Rockies.

Rated difficult due to steep grades, loose shale, and unpredictable creek crossings that can turn nasty after rain. Capable 4WD with skid plates essential, plus recovery gear and spare parts. June to September offers the best conditions, though early season snow can linger at higher elevations. No services or permits required, but this is genuine wilderness—pack everything including emergency supplies. The reward is exclusive access to some of the Peace River country’s most spectacular waterfalls and untouched alpine terrain.
