Williston Lake East Shore Mining Road

Drowned valley mining road along Williston Lake

Moderate

This forgotten mining road traces Williston Lake’s eastern shoreline through the drowned Peace River valley, where massive stumps still poke through BC’s largest reservoir like tombstones of the old-growth forest. The 120-kilometer route starts near Mackenzie and follows old coal exploration roads past flooded homesteads and mining camps from the 1970s. Key challenge is the Ospika River crossing at kilometer 80—no bridge, just a rocky ford that can turn treacherous during spring runoff or after heavy rain.

Moderate to difficult depending on water levels and seasonal conditions. Stock 4WD handles most sections, but the river crossing and several steep rocky climbs around old strip mines demand high clearance and careful throttle work. Best from July through September when water levels drop. No permits but this is true backcountry—nearest fuel is Mackenzie, 120 kilometers back. The solitude is absolute, with excellent fishing for lake trout and some of the most haunting landscape in northern BC where civilization got swallowed by progress.
