Esteros del Iberá Southern Access Circuit
Floating wetland wilderness traverse
The southern approach to Esteros del Iberá follows raised dirt tracks through 13,000 square kilometers of floating wetlands, where caimans sun themselves on embarcaderos and giant otters hunt in crystal-clear lagoons. The route connects isolated gaucho settlements from Galarza to Yahaveré, threading between massive water hyacinth islands that drift with the wind. During high water season, the road becomes a causeway with wetland stretching to both horizons.
Standard clearance vehicles can handle dry season conditions, but wet season (December-March) requires serious ground clearance and potentially a snorkel. Mud holes appear suddenly, and getting stuck means waiting for help from passing estancieros. Carry plenty of water despite being surrounded by it – this water needs treatment. The circuit rewards patient drivers with unmatched wildlife viewing: marsh deer, howler monkeys, and over 350 bird species in an ecosystem barely touched by modern development.
