Esteros del Iberá Northwestern Wetlands Access Circuit

Argentina's Okavango Delta wildlife paradise

Moderate

The northwestern sector of Esteros del Iberá reveals Argentina’s greatest wildlife spectacle through a network of sandy tracks connecting floating islands and hidden lagoons. This route begins at Colonia Pellegrini and follows cattle trails established by wetland gauchos who’ve worked these waters for generations. The track crosses Laguna Iberá at its narrowest point via an ancient earthen causeway, then winds through palm savannas where caimans, capybaras, and over 300 bird species thrive in pristine habitat. Isla Apipé Grande offers the most remote camping with no facilities but incredible wildlife encounters.

Moderate difficulty requiring 4WD with good ground clearance for deep sand and seasonal flooding. Sandy sections demand momentum and proper tire pressure management. Best visited May through September during dry season when tracks are passable and wildlife concentrates around permanent water. No permits required but register with park rangers at Pellegrini. Fuel up before entering – nearest station is 80km away. Respect gaucho traditions and private lands within the reserve. This is South America’s Okavango Delta – a vast wetland wilderness where Argentina’s natural heritage survives untouched.
