Wedge Overlook to Iron Wash — San Rafael Swell West Rim Desert Circuit
Slot reef, Sinbad country, nobody else around.
Iron Wash Road drops into the San Rafael Swell from the west off I-70 and immediately earns your respect. The wash itself — a sandy, rocky slot through the San Rafael Reef — demands attention: loose cobble, soft sand pockets, and narrow canyon walls that will scrape a wide rig without apology. Once through the reef, the route opens onto the interior swell benches where you’re navigating across slickrock and two-track toward the badlands fringing the southern Swell, with the Factory Butte flats visible to the south and the San Rafael River drainage cutting deep to your east. The route traces BLM two-track through Sinbad Country, a landscape so empty it felt like another planet before anyone thought to call it that.
This is a moderate-to-difficult route depending heavily on recent weather — the wash sections become impassable quicksand after rain and can hold soft sand for days. High clearance is mandatory; lockers help in the wash. Plan for a full day minimum or camp on the interior benches where dispersed camping is legal and completely unrestricted. No water on route — carry everything. No permit required, no fee. Green River to the north is your fuel and resupply point. Emery County roads in this area receive minimal maintenance, so a trail map and GPS are non-negotiable.
